Simon Rattle one of the world’s premier conductors comes to talk to Charlie Rose about his work. He is articulate and intelligent, a strong personality. He speaks about the task of the conductor, about the way ten different conductors would each make a piece of music sound differently. He speaks about his own exuberance and says he once tried to tone it down but then realized that the exuberance was who he really was. He speaks about his joy in conducting. And he speaks about how joy can be profound. He cites Beckett’s words which are something like,” Fail Always, Try Again. Fail Better.” as description of dealing with some of the more difficult works of the repertoire. He speaks about his eighteen years conducting in Birmingham and working to build an orchestra there. He speaks about involving young people in music and the work he is doing with the Berlin Philarmonic.
I would have liked him to speak a bit more about specific pieces of music he has played. But on the whole a very interesting interview.
